The Donut Shop was a music blog I start in my final year of university. I grew up in the music blog era of how new music was being discovered and consumed. After writing for multiple publications, I was sick of this “junk food” approach to music and wanted to create a platform that allowed sharing of music that was both old and new. I wanted to treat music like a fine wine, something that get’s better with age. There was a saturation of music within the blog community because of the sheer number of people posting the same thing. Everyone is competing to find the next hot song and a lot of the time missing what’s right in front of them. At the end of the day we were not concerned with posting what is new or what is hot. The Donut Shop was in business for putting out timeless music. New or old, every post will be a classic.
I had a team of 15 people and we did everything from daily music blogs, curated playlists, our own radio station and video content. We didn’t really know what we were doing but we managed to gain fans from almost ever continent. We were generating over 10,000 page views our first month and getting reposted from some of our favourite artists like: Peter Bjorn and John and Clubfeet.
After we all graduated I pass the blog down to the next group of music driven students. Unfortunately, it didn’t last as long as we hoped but the spirit of The Donut Shop still lives in everything I do.
